We are supporting Waltham Forest Council to convene a Learning Disability and Autism reference group, to bring together voluntary and community sector organisations, carer and user representatives, together with some public sector representatives, to set agendas and priorities around learning disability and autism services, as well as look at the potential to do more joint working in future.

The first meeting will be Wednesday 28th November, between 1.00 and 2.30pm.

Organisations and groups tell us there is plenty of scope for better communication and joint working between public services, community sector services, parent/carers and service users on priorities, to improve services and to work together to improve provision through partnerships.  It is hoped that this group can be a single, useful forum to influence policy and priorities, ensure that existing public sector action plans are in delivery and subject to some scrutiny, and to grow relationships between different people and groups - potentially including to look at joint bidding in future for projects to meet identified priorities.  It could also be useful to map services.

It is possible that there could be sub-groups or initiatives looking at particular aspects of provision, but we think it is most realistic and useful to develop a single forum in the first instance.

A number of organisations have been individually invited, but if you are supporting people with learning disabilities and autism, as an organisation or group, you are very welcome to join us.  It is envisaged that this first meeting will begin to discuss priorities/agenda for the group and who else should be invited, and will subsequently plan for future meetings in the new year (which could include evening meetings).  There is also an expressed interest from public services in visiting groups if that would be a more convenient way to develop communication and partnership.

If you would like to attend, or to register your interest to be informed of future events by email, please contact Alison.
