Waltham Forest Council has launched a competition for artists, architects and designers to produce innovative ideas for the future look of Walthamstow High Street, home to the famous Walthamstow Market, and is encouraging local residents to vote on the design suggestions.
The design competition has been recently launched, in partnership with Matter Architecture and invites expressions of interest by Tuesday 28 August. Shortlisted submissions will then be invited to present their ideas to the public on Sunday 16 September at 6pm at the HighTide Festival site in Walthamstow Town Square.
The Rosebank Villas route into the High Street has been chosen for the project which should:
Celebrate the history of the High Street and Market and reflect local character of place
Strengthen local identity, create a destination and a sense of arrival
Be deliverable and robust, and self-sufficient in terms of maintenance
Include innovative place-making which improves connectivity and navigation to the High Street
Enhance the space for businesses, residents and visitors alike
